From log feeds to detections teams can trust
Validate the path from source events to alerts, investigation and monitoring health.
An active SIEM agent does not prove that a useful detection is working. Audit settings, event decoding, rule logic and alert delivery all affect what the security team can see.
My manufacturing SIEM engagement connected Wazuh platform design with source configuration, detection guidance and operations. These checks help teams assess that complete path.
Define the question and its evidence
Start with an activity the team can investigate, such as failed sign-ins followed by successful access. Identify the required events, fields and timing, then work back to the source system’s audit and export settings.
Trace a representative event through collection and decoding. Check identity, time, source and result fields before relying on them in a rule. A connected source with missing fields can still leave a detection ineffective.
Validate logic and delivery separately
Use rule-testing tools to check normal activity and suspicious sequences. Test variations in grouping, frequency and timing. A technique label or high severity is not evidence that a detection works.
Then confirm that an alert reaches the expected queue or notification channel with enough context to investigate. The delivery path has its own dependencies, including relays and receiving services.
Record the purpose of suppression rules and exceptions. Review them when the source or business process changes, since noise reduction can also remove useful evidence.
Monitor the service itself
Track source freshness, agent connectivity, collector health and processing failures. Assign someone to investigate gaps. An absence of alerts can reflect either normal activity or missing telemetry.
Include capacity and recovery in the operating model. Application restart, host recovery and retained-log restoration solve different problems.
Track each source through configuration, collection, decoding, validation and handover. This shows what the team can rely on today and what still needs work.
